Artist’s Statement

I could say I create art because it feeds my soul, but navel gazing is only interesting when there’s a surprising amount of lint collected within. Like a fuzzy bellybutton after a long, hard day, the interesting bits of life are often found in small, surprising places.

I tend to focus on nature’s details because I was taught it’s rude to stare. So, instead of glorifying the wrinkles and physical quirks that make people unique, I look at the way plants live. The way their veins direct their energy to growth. The way they twist their stems against unseen forces. The weird way they evolve to survive and thrive. I even find beauty and elegance in the way they die.

When I venture away from flora, I like to experiment in how I put the paint on the canvas (or whatever support I’m using). Sometimes that leads me to linear views similar to my flowers, sometimes… not.

I work mainly in acrylics, but photography provides the bulk of my inspiration, and, sometimes, the finished piece itself. Each medium provides its own elemental truth of the subject, and part of my job as an artist is to find which truth the subject wishes to take.

About the Artist:

Elizabeth Clark was born and raised in Colorado, but has been fortunate enough to live and travel around the US and the world. (If she could retire anyplace, she would choose Wellington, NZ. The Hills! The Clouds! The people!) but she now happily resides in New Mexico (a US state) with her husband and son.
