Description

Here’s another experimental piece that I really like how it turned out.

I began by cutting up a canvas’ worth of canvas into little strips of varying size, fraying them, then dying them several colors. I then glued them onto a stretched canvas with matte medium gel, making sure their edges formed the textures I wanted. It was a lot messier than I was anticipating as I didn’t set the dye first. Oops. But, it was a happy accident, as the colors bled into each other in really interesting ways.

After everything was glued in place, I started painting the pieces to add protection and resolution to the piece. I finished the piece by making sure each piece had at least one layer of matte medium.

The result is very sculptural, and it does change in feel as the light or perspective shifts. There’s also a surprise glimmer in the light.

This is an extreme case of best viewed in person. The photos really don’t capture the beauty and interest of this one.
